Top International Rider to Compete at Himachal Pradesh Mountain Biking

Hercules MTB Himachal 2013, one of the toughest mountain biking rallies all across the world will also have the top rider of Portugal Ricardo Rodrigues Martins as one of its participants.  This is the first time that Martins will be appearing in any Asian biking event. He has been the national champion thrice and has even ranked 16th throughout the world. Mohit Sood, the president of the Himalayan Adventure Sports and Tourism Promotion Association (HASTPA), confirmed his participation in the contest to IANS.

As per Sood, the MTB Himachal 2013 will commence in Shimla from September 27 and more than 60 cycling enthusiasts belonging to eight different countries will compete with each other in this seven-day long event. Apart from international contestants, teams from the Indian Air Force and Indian Army wings are also a part of this competition.

Apart from Martin, Luis Canto Moniz, another Portuguese cycling ardent plus the Ferrari India general manager is also participating in the event. During the biking rally, all the contestants will pass through the scenic forest trails, metalled and unmetalled roads of remote villages. This time the length of the biking tack has been increased from 438 km to 500 km. The rally will cross Shimla, Kufri, Mashobra, Narkanda, Matiana, Hatu, Baghi, Tikkar, Khadrala and will finally return back to Shimla for culmination. Hatu peak, perched at an altitude of 3,300-metre will be the highest point of this biking rally and on an average; a biker will have to pedal around 70 km every day. The Hercules MTB is reckoned as the third-toughest mountain biking event all across the globe following the Trans-Alps Challen.

The growing craze of mountain biking in India can be seen from the fact that Zoe Beesley, a UK-based school teacher plus an avid traveler and cyclist is going to compete in the MTB Himalaya 2013 competition. Ashish Sood, one of the organizers of this event said that MTB Himalaya 2013 is working hard in the direction to take cycling India at new heights on the world’s map of mountain biking. He further added by saying that nothing is as inspiring as to see the topmost cycling enthusiasts throughout the world competing at the MTB 2013 competition.

While describing about Zoe’s talent and skills, Sood said that though she started cycling on a road bike while pursuing college education, need to go beyond the limits were felt. In order to adapt herself to the single track conditions, she switched to fatter MTB tyres and till then Zoe has never looked back. She has tasted victory of podium finish at Cross Country as well as endurance categories on several occasions including Scottish and Trans Nepal races. She is planning to shift to New Zealand by this year end.

When asked about MTB Himalaya 2013, Zoe answered, “why would you NOT want to race at the MTB Himalaya???!!!There is nothing like waking up with the Himalayas on your doorstep and getting to explore them on two wheels. Dusty trails, lung busting climbs, epic descents, panoramic mountain views, likeminded people and lots of curry!!!”

As she would be staying for cycling, India almost a month, she plans to share her so far experience and knowledge of mountain biking and environment conservation with the young children of local schools. The MTB Himalaya 2013 will be held from 27th Sept to 3rd Oct 2013, starting from Shimla in a track of 500 kms with a maximum altitude of 3120 meters.
